Welcome to Your Ultimate Resource for Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

Ever had a visitor from the US jump into the driver's seat on the wrong side? There's actually a fascinating reason behind that confusion — and it goes back centuries.
Jamaica drives on the left because of British colonial rule. When Britain governed the island, left-hand traffic was the law of the Empire — made mandatory across all British territories in 1835. The practice itself is even older than that, rooted in medieval England where horse riders kept to the left so their dominant (sword) hand stayed closer to anyone approaching from the opposite direction. Practical, right?
When Jamaica gained independence on August 6, 1962, we kept the system. And for good reason — our roads, our vehicles, our entire infrastructure had been built around it. Switching would have meant replacing or converting thousands of right-hand drive vehicles, redesigning road layouts, and retraining an entire population. The cost and disruption simply weren't worth it.
Not every Caribbean island made the same call though. Islands that fell under French, Dutch, or Spanish colonial rule — like Martinique, Curaçao, and Cuba — drive on the right. And some islands, like the U.S. Virgin Islands, ended up in an unusual situation: they drive on the left, but most of their cars are imported from the US and are left-hand drive. Imagine navigating that!
Today, Jamaica stands alongside fellow former British Caribbean territories — Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia, Antigua — all keeping left, all carrying that shared colonial history on every road and highway.
Next time you're behind the wheel, you're not just driving — you're part of over 400 years of history. 🇯🇲
